Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS)
In 1989, State government legislation dissolved the Cumberland College of Health Sciences (CCHS) and re-established it as an academic college of the University of Sydney with effect from 1 January 1990. Senate approved the name change from the CCHS to the Faculty of Health Sciences on 2 September 1991. On 28 October 1991, the academic activities and staff of the College were established as the Faculty of Health Sciences in the University of Sydney, with the associated appointment of a Dean.As from 1 January 1994, the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences was integrated into the Faculty of Nursing.Senate Resolution SEN_7/15_98As part of the University's strategic planning 2016-2020, Senate decided in December 2015 to reduce the number of faculties from 16 to six, with three additional schools reporting directly to the Provost, to come into effect 1 January 2017. In December 2016 the Senate approved the establishment of the new Faculty of Medicine and Health, which will consist of schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Public Health and Biomedical Sciences (working title). It will also include the current Faculty of Health Sciences as a school when it moves to the Camperdown/Darlington Campus from its current location in Lidcombe.Senate Resolution SEN_16/6-105At 12 December 2016 meeting of Senate, Senate approved the creation of the new Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH), which will consist of schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Public Health and Biomedical Sciences (working title). It will also include the current Faculty of Health Sciences as a school when it moves to the Camperdown/Darlington Campus from its current location in Lidcombe in 2020. The name of the school will be The University of Sydney School of Health Sciences. The new Faculty of Medicine and Health came into operation on 30 April 2018. [On 17 September 2018 the Executive Dean (FMH) Professor Robyn Ward announced that the Faculty of Health Sciences would be formally merged with FMH on 1 January 2020. She said the decision to set a date for integration was to ensure that the strategic planning and alignment would be optimised at the earliest opportunity. (source Staff News, 2 Oct 2018)On 10 February 2020 the Vice-Chancellor announced in a letter to all staff that Professor Robyn Ward's title had changed to Executive Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Medicine and Health. The change corresponded with the completion of the merger of five former faculties and two schools to establish the Faculty of Medicine and Health. The last school to join FMH, the School of Health Sciences, completed its merger on January 1.
