In 1989, State government legislation dissolved the Cumberland College of Health Sciences (CCHS) as a College of Advanced Education and reestablished it as an academic college of the University of Sydney with effect from 1 January 1990.
The Cumberland College Board had the powers and functions of a faculty. Senate approved the name change from the CCHS to the Faculty of Health Sciences on 2 September 1991. On 28 October 1991, the academic activities and staff of the College were established as the Faculty of Health Sciences in the University of Sydney, with the associated appointment of a Dean. "The Faculty shall encourage teaching, scholarship and research in the Departments, Schools and Centres that the Vice-Chancellor has determined shall be placed under the supervision of the Faculty of Health Sciences and shall have the same powers and functions as are specified for faculties by resolution of the Senate."
