Geological Survey Field Notebooks [Tannatt William Edgeworth (TWE) David] (Series 1468)

The records in this series especially document TWE David's geological surveys for coal in the Hunter valley - Lake Macquarie region of NSW. Before David became Professor of Geology at the University of Sydney in 1891, he worked as a geologist with the NSW government, commencing on his arrival in Australia in late 1882. It could be argued that the NSW Government owns copyright to field notebooks compiled during David's employment with the NSW Geological Survey. The other records document surveys carried out in:

- Queensland in 1888, 1895, 1910, 1921, 1925 and 1929

- Tasmania in 1892, 1906, 1910-1912, 1921-1923 and 1925

- South Australia in 1897, 1901, 1919, 1921, 1924, 1925, 1930 and 1932

- Victoria in 1894, 1923 and 1928

- Western Australia in 1910, 1921 and 1925.

The earliest notebook pertains to David's geological work in the district of his birth, Glamorganshire in Wales. This and some of the other volumes contain illustrations in pencil/ink. Only five volumes document David's visits overseas to USA in 1906, South Africa in 1925, Britain in 1926. The field notebooks documenting visits to Funafuti in 1897-1898, to Kosciusko in 1905-1907, and to Antarctica in 1908-1909 are arranged in Series 1455, 1463 and 1448 respectively. The field notebooks pertaining to David's research into fossil fauna in the Adelaide series of rocks in South Australia from 1929 to 1933 are arranged in Series 1462.
