Notebooks Relating to 1897-1898 Funafuti Coral Boring Expeditions [Tannatt William Edgeworth (TWE) David] (Series 1455)

This series contains two notebooks (Item 2 and 4) of field notes documenting surveys undertaken in both the 1897 and 1898 expeditions to Funafuti. A large notebook (Item 3), relating to the 1897 Funafuti expedition, contains data headed "Section through Diamond Drill Bore at Funafuti". An exercise book (Item 1) contains extracts from literature on coral reefs, observational and analytical data especially on lagoon dredgings compiled by TWE David and others. The series includes a map in pencil (Item 5), possibly drawn by David, and typescripts authored by G Halligan, A Finckh, G Sweet, and annotated by David; also photographs of two folios written by David, now in an especially fragile state. Most of the records are undated.

In 1904, the Royal Society of London published "The Atoll of Funafuti" which includes papers authored by David in collaboration with G Sweet entitled "The Geology of Funafuti", with Halligan and Finckh entitled "Report on Dredging at Funafuti", and two papers authored by Halligan entitled "Report of Lagoon Borings" and "Permanent Reference Marks on the Island of Funafuti".
