Faculty of Pharmacy
The NSW Pharmacy Act 1897 included in the requirements for registration passing examinations in chemistry, practical chemistry, botany and materia medica at the University. In March 1918 the first Chair in Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine was appointed. In August 1918 Senate appointed a Board of Studies in Pharmacy to supervise the courses in that subject. In 1933 Senate approved the establishment of a Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science. It appears that at the same time the Department of Pharmacy was moved from Medicine to the Faculty of Science.
In 1960 a degree course in Pharmacy was introduced in the Faculty of Science.
On 1 January 1998 the Department of Pharmacy was transferred from the College of Sciences and Technology to the College of Health Sciences. The view was that Pharmacy had more aligned with that College.
The Faculty of Pharmacy was created by Senate in November 1999, to commence on 1 January 2000. In 1999 the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences) prepared a report to the Academic Board containing recommendations concerning new Resolutions of Senate and amendments to existing Resolutions of Senate to give effect to Senate's decision of 6 August 1999 to approve in principle the establishment of a Faculty of Pharmacy.
Senate 14.12.2017: Resolution SEN_7/15_98
As part of the University's strategic planning 2016-2020, Senate decided in December 2015 to reduce the number of faculties from 16 to six, with three additional schools reporting directly to the Provost, to come into effect 1 January 2017. The Faculty of Pharmacy is to be abolished and will be within a Faculty (yet to be named) which includes Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing and Midwifery.
At the 12 December 2016 meeting, Senate approved the creation of the new Faculty of Medicine and Health, which will consist of schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Public Health and Biomedical Sciences (working title). It will also include the current Faculty of Health Sciences as a school when it moves to the Camperdown/Darlington Campus from its current location in Lidcombe.
