Buildings and Grounds Committee

A Building and Improvements Committee was established by Senate 7 October 1889 (G1/1/8 p 179) "to take charge of the building and grounds of the University and to have a general control over the votes for building and improvements. That such a committee consists of the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, the Hon. Sir John Hay, Mr NC Russell, Mr CB Stephen, the Hon. Dr MacLaurin, Professor Stuart and Professor Liversidge." The Committee was named Building, Grounds and Improvements Committee, its name later changed to Buildings and Grounds Committee (between February and June 1908).In 1990 the Building and Grounds Committee: Subject to Senate, this Committee was responsible for the development of long term policy for the overall planning of buildings and grounds for all University sites, and concerned with maintaining and improving the quality of the University environment."At its meeting on 5 October 1993 Senate abolished the Building and Grounds Committee; the functions of the Committee were distributed between Senate itself, the Finance & Planning Committee of Senate and management as appropriate. Most function went to the Finance & Planning Committee while the Vice-Chancellor assumed responsibility for the utilisation of facilities and sites and the utilisation and the management of expenditure associated with utilities, while Senate assumed responsibility for the protection of the University environment with special reference to the Site Plan and more generally in respect of aesthetics, heritage responsibilities, safety and other legislative requirements as well as the naming of buildings and sites.
