New South Wales Coalfields [Tannatt William Edgeworth (TWE) David] (Series 1466)

The longest documents in this series are geological sections from the Port of Newcastle to Moon Island situated at the ocean entrance to Lake Macquarie (Item 1; 4 metres), and from Wyong to Raymond Terrace (Item 3, 2.3 metres). Both items are ascribed to TWE David. Although all of the documents appear to be originals, about half are ascribed to persons other than David. Most documents pertain to the Newcastle region, some to Bulli and Sydney. Numerical data relates to bores in the Hunter River Valley. There is a detailed "calculation as to probable quantity of coal under the holding of the Sydney Harbour Collieries Co." (Item 6, five folios). Items not mentioned above:

The related series include Series 1468, field notebooks; Series 1469, Item 2, a volume of "Geological maps and sections of the coal measures in the Hunter River District" by David; Series 1475, correspondence; and Series 1478, photographs, especially Item 1; and Series 1495, press cuttings/reports. It was decided to arrange these records in one series rather than leave them in the series of miscellaneous working papers and plans because of David's major contribution to the coal industry in NSW before his appointment to the University. As Assistant Geological Surveyor with the Government of NSW, he systematically mapped and correlated coalfields in the British colony.
