Biology Notebooks of Dene Barnett Fry [Department of Zoology] (Series 337)

This series originated from the Department of Zoology and comprises three notebooks created by Dene Barnett Fry. It was presented by Mr and Mrs Arthur Fry to the Department of Zoology.  The notebooks contain original field notes on natural history, press cuttings, colour sketches and extracts from books and papers. Dene Barnett Fry, born in 1893, was employed by the University as a Junior Demonstrator in Zoology in 1915 [G8 Salaries and Wages Register Vol 2, Folio 52]. Fry appears to have enrolled as a student in Science I in 1915, but did not sit examinations [G3/185 Examination Results Register Vol 16]. Fry was a Private with the Australian Infantry Forces and was killed in action in France in 1917 [University Calendar 1918, p 638]. There was formerly a Fry Library in the Department of Zoology, reputed to have been established as a memorial to Fry by his parents. It has not been possible to verify this from records held in the University Archives or from University Calendars. The Faculty of Science's centenary publication "Ever Reaping Something New" edited by David Branagan and Graham Holland and published in 1985, refers to Fry on Page 158.
