Department of Zoology
In 1914, the Department of Biology was rearranged following the appointment of a separate Chair of Botany and the establishment of a Department of Botany. The Chair and Department of Biology was restyled the Chair and Department of Zoology. This change was approved in August 1914 [1914 Report of the Senate, Pages. vi and 579].
Lecture subjects in 1914 were:
A. Zoology: a course of fifty lectures illustrated by specimens and diagrams and supplemented by occasional demonstrations.I. Intro to Biology. Main divisions of the science.II. General structure and physiology of animals. Amoeba. The cell: its structure and multiplication. The ovum and sperm. Maturation and impregnation. Segmentation. Histology of animals. The various systems of organs, and their principal functions. Reproduction, asexual and sexual,. Symmetry.III. General account of the following phyla, with descriptions of representative examples: Protozoa, Porifera, Coelentera, Platodes, Nemathelminthes, Echinoderma, Annulata, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Chordata.P222.
B. Practical Zoology - Elementary Course: an elementary course for Medical and Science students of the first year. The following animals are studied - Paramoecium, Vorticella, Obelia, Fasciola, Nereis, Asterina, Helix, Palinurus, Periplaneta, Trygonoptera, Hyla, Columba, Lepus.ZOOLOGY II and IIIADVANCED COURSESTwo advanced courses one on the Morphology and Embryology of the Invertebrata, with laboratory work; the other on the Morphology and Embryology of the Vertebrata, with laboratory work.Following a proposal by the Professors of Botany and Zoology to the Vice-Chancellor in April 1962 to amalgamate the Botany and Zoology Departments, Senate approved the formation of a School of Biological Sciences, and the following steps were taken to implement such formation:-(1) the title of the Professor of Botany to be altered to that of Professor of Biology', and the title of Challis Professor of Zoology to that of Challis Professor of Biology, such changes to be effective from 1st January, 1963.
