Administrative Records [Department of Zoology] [Macleay Museum] (Series 331)

Some of the records in this series originated from the Department of Zoology. They are in typescript and handwritten format. The oldest record is a register of supplies/requisitions dating from 1892 to 1908, prior to the establishment of the Department of Zoology. This register was used in later years (1932 to 1934) to record plankton catch data.

Other records in this series include:

- correspondence, dated 1925 to 1926, addressed to Professor L Harrison in his capacity as member of the Committee on Printing Records of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-13;

- three photographic negatives of Professor William John (WJ) Dakin;

- a copy of a typescript on Dakin's work as Technical Director of Camouflage during World War II;

- records pertaining to ARH Woodhill and Kathleen English;

- correspondence regarding the conditions of award of the Caley Memorial Scholarship; and

- copies of Handbooks of the Department of Zoology for 1959 and 1964.

The records pertaining to the Macleay Museum date from 1949 to 1978 and include:

- correspondence relating to personnel, and to the transfer of the Museum's insect collection; and 

- material for an obituary on Kathleen English.

William John Dakin accepted the Challis Chair of Zoology at the University of Sydney on 12 July 1928. At the time, he was Professor of Zoology at the University of Liverpool, England. From 1912 to 1919, Dakin had been foundation Professor of Biology at the University of Western Australia. Dakin retired in December 1948 and was appointed Emeritus Professor in 1949. He died in 1950. ARH Woodhill DScAgr was appointed McCaughey Lecturer in Entomology in 1930, promoted to Reader in 1953, and retired in 1965 [Woodhill personnel file, G3/158].

Kathleen English (1889-1977) BSc 1915, carried out research in entomology in a voluntary capacity.
