22nd Jul 2025 3:31PMSuch events in the 1960s were relatively light-hearted and very tame by today's standards. The NSW Governor, Sir Rodan Cutler, was a highly respected and well-liked figure in the community. He had lost a leg and won a VC while fighting with the Australian Army against the Vichy French troops in Syria. The target of the "disturbance" was the University Regiment and the Vietnam draft and certainly not him.
The protesters were inspired by the much more serious protests against the Reserve Officers Training Courses in the US throughout the Vietnam War which culminated in the 1970 demonstration and massacre on the campus of Kent State University in early 1970.
The 1970 and 1971 protests in Sydney against the Vietnam War and the ones against Springbok Rugby Tour in 1971 were also more serious, aggravated by right-wing state governments in NSW, police over-reaction and arrests. Fortunately nobody was killed.
