Miscellaneous Photographs [Registrar] (Series 167)

An artificial series established by Gerald Fischer, second University Archivist, as a way to deal with single, or small numbers of photographs given to the Archives by members of the public, or from inside the University. Originally it was modeled on the then Mitchell Library Small Pictures File. Photographs were divided into groups: Portraits (Port), Buildings and Grounds (BG) and General (Gen).
During the time of Ken Smith, third University Archivist, a sub-series of negatives was created. When a researcher requested a copy of a print for which there was no negative, they had to pay for the negative to be made by the University Photographic Service (later called Photowise) which was used to make the copy print. The negative was retained by the Archives.
In addition to the original prints there are also copy prints for reference use for many of the photographs.
The photographs were digitised and previously made available through a website called Archives Mediabank.
