At 12 December 2016 meeting of Senate, Senate approved the creation of the new Faculty of Medicine and Health, which would consist of schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Public Health and Biomedical Sciences (working title since changed to School of Medical Sciences). It would also include the then Faculty of Health Sciences as a school when it moved to the Camperdown/Darlington Campus from its location in Lidcombe. The new faculty was to become operational in April 2018. [Senate Resolution SEN_16/6-105]
As of 30 April 2018 the School of Medical Sciences (SOMs) became a school within the new Faculty of Medicine and Health. [Faculty of Health and Medicine News (7 March 2018)]
In 2021, as a research-intensive group of disciplines comprising anatomy and histology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology, the School of Medical Sciences contributed to courses in medicine, science, dentistry and pharmacy, producing high-impact research across a range of biomedical fields and were a key part of the Brain and Mind Centre.
