In September 2015 the University announced that a major donation of Dr Chau Chak Wing would allow the University to establish a new museum at the University of Sydney housing the University’s Macleay, Nicholson and University Art Gallery collections. The donation was to fund the building of a 6000 square metre museum by redeveloping the historic Macleay and adjacent Edgeworth David buildings and connecting them via a new modern extension. Further major donations by the Nelson Meers Foundation, Penelope Seidler and The Ian Potter Foundation assisted the University to build a new museum, on 18 November 2016 the University announced a new location for the Museum and outlined its plans to bring together the collections of the Nicholson, Macleay Museum and University Art Gallery into the new Chau Chak Wing Museum.
