Board of Postgraduate Studies [Sydney Teachers College (STC)]

At the 17 June 1976 meeting of the Academic Board, it was decided to establish a Board of Studies for the Divisions of Primary, Secondary and Graduate Studies. Each Board was to comprise: a) Head of Division as Chair; b) the Principal and Vice Principal (ex officio); c) three student members; d) Head of Library Services, or nominee; and e) members of academic staff who were members of the Academic Board or who were nominated by their Head of Department.

At its first meeting on 29 July 1976, consideration was given to the functions of the Board, which was named the Board of Studies for Postgraduate Diplomas and Degrees. By a memo from the Principal dated 3 November 1976, the name was changed to Board of Postgraduate Studies, in keeping with the change of the name of the Division to the Postgraduate Division (File 76/0814).

At the 17 November 1977 Academic Board meeting, the composition of all Boards of Studies was changed to: a) Head of Division as Chair; b) Deputy Head of Division (Deputy Chair), and one Head of Department, or nominee, from specified areas; c) Program Director for each Postgraduate program; d) seven staff representatives from the same areas as b); e) representation from departments offering professional courses, a total of seven; f) College secretary, or nominee; g) Head of Library Services, or nominee; and h) four students from curriculum areas of Grad Dip Ed.

The functions of the Boards of Studies were set out as:
1) to consider matters concerning the academic work of the Division, and make recommendations to the Academic Board;
2) consider and make recommendations concerning matters submitted to it;
3) make recommendations with reference to: courses of study within the Division, selection, examination and classification of students, award of prizes, school experiences, resources, the Library in relation to the academic work of the Division, administrative procedures affecting the work of the Division, relationships between the Division and other institutions, professional development of staff including research, allocation of finance, advertisement of students, and other matters relating to the organisation and functioning of the Division.

On 8 November 1980, the Academic Board again changed the membership of the Board to: a) Dean of School; b) Associate Dean; c) Director of Continuing Education; d) Program Director, or nominee, for each graduate diploma program; e) Registrar, or nominee; f) Director, Resource Centre, or nominee; g) four students, as specified; h) two heads of departmentsl i) two members of academic staff; and j) Program Director, Grad Dip Ed.
