On 6 November 1961, Senate approved the establishment of a Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science and on 14 June 1962, the by-laws under which the Committee operated were approved. The events leading to the establishment of the Committee commenced in May 1961 when a group of veterinarians formed themselves into a Provisional Post-Graduate Committee to examine the possibility of establishing a permanent Post-Graduate Committee. The Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science held its inaugural meeting on 13 July 1962. The Minute series for the Postgraduate Committee includes the minutes for meetings of the Provisional Committee in Post-Graduate Veterinary Science. The Post Graduate Committee in Veterinary Science is first listed in the 1963 University Calendar, By Laws Chapter XXXV p.301 & Resolutions of Senate p. 333-334. The Committee's role was the:
- promotion of post-graduate education, study, work and research in Veterinary Science.
- The Committee shall consist of-(a) the Chancellor, the Deputy-Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, such Fellows of the Senate as are qualified to be members of the veterinary profession, the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the President of the Board of Veterinary Surgeons of New South Wales as ex-officio members; (b) representative members, but not more than twenty appointed by the Senate; (c) co-opted members, if any, but not more than four, who may be elected by the ex-officio and the appointed members; (d) members, if any, by virtue of appointment as Chairman, as Honorary Director of Post-Graduate Veterinary Studies, or as Honorary Secretary.
- A Chairman, an Honorary Director of Post-Graduate Veterinary Studies who may also be Chairman or Honorary Secretary, and an Honorary Secretary shall be appointed by the Senate either from among the members of the Committee or otherwise. Any person so appointed shall, except in the case of an ex-officio member, be a member by virtue of such appointment, and his membership, if any, as a representative or co-opted member shall cease.
- The Chairman, Honorary Director of Post-Graduate Veterinary Studies, Honorary Secretary and representative members shall be appointed, and a vacancy in any such office may be filled by the Senate on the recommendation of the Committee. Provided that the first appointment of Chairman, Honorary Director of Post-Graduate Veterinary Studies, Honorary Secretary and representative members may be made as the Senate deems proper. Where a representative member has leave from the Committee to be absent for a period exceeding three months, the Senate may appoint a person as a representative member in his place during such absence.
- Members (other than ex-officio members) shall have such qualifications and hold office for such periods and subject to such conditions as may be prescribed by resolution of the Senate.
- The Committee and its officers shall have such powers, duties and functions as may be prescribed by or under resolution of the Senate, provided that all acts of the Committee shall be subject to the By-laws and to any direction which may be given by the Senate.
- The Senate shall provide such secretarial assistance as it deems proper for the Committee. By Resolution of Senate the Powers, Duties, and Functions of the Committee were more closely defined: The Committee may: (a) organize post-graduate courses, demonstrations and lectures, and other post-graduate instruction in Veterinary Science within the University or elsewhere; (b) engage in such activities as it thinks desirable for promoting post-graduate education, study and work in Veterinary Science; (c ) co-operate with scientific bodies recognized as having similar or allied objects; (d) do such things as it thinks proper for any of the matter mentioned in this resolution. The Committee shall recommend to the Senate: ( a ) the persons to be employed as lecturers; ( b) the scientific bodies to be recognized as having similar or allied objects; (c ) the establishments to be approved for postgraduate work.
- The Committee may determine: (a ) the tenure of office of lecturers, and the duties to be performed by them; (b) the remuneration and expenses to be paid in respect of lectures, demonstrations, and classes; (c) the fees, charges, and moneys to be paid to the Committee or to any person on its behalf in respect of lectures, demonstrations, and classes or otherwise.
On 3 October 1995 Senate by Resolution 100/95 item 7, amended the constitution of the Committee and disestablished the committee, to be re-established in 1996. Management of funds held by the Postgraduate Committee regarding continuing education passed to the Postgraduate Foundation in Veterinary Science. Senate resolved
(i) to approve the amendments to the Constitution of the Postgraduate Foundation in Veterinary Science and the Constitution of the Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science to take effect from 1 January 1996;
(ii) to disestablish the present Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science on 31 December 1995 and thank its members for their services to the University;
(iii) after consultation with the Postgraduate Foundation in Veterinary Science, to transfer all funds remaining in the accounts for the present Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science and all its outstanding commitments and liabilities to appropriate accounts of the Postgraduate Foundation in Veterinary Science on 31 December 1995;
(iv) to request the members of the new Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science to elect in accordance with Clause 4 of the Constitution a Chair to take office on 1 January 1996; and
(v) to request the Foundation and the Committee to provide a joint progress report to Senate by June 1996 on their operations[Report on the proposed changes to the Constitutions of the Postgraduate Foundation in Veterinary Science and the Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science (pages 3514 - 3523)]
Following a review of its Foundations by the University, Senate on 3 December 2007 decided to disestablish the Postgraduate Foundation in Veterinary Science as a University Foundation and recommended to approve its establishment as a University Centre with effect from 4 December 2007. To allow for alignment with its true function, the Provost, resolved to confirm the establishment of the Centre as an educational Centre (not as a foundation), as part of the University’s organisational structure effective from 4 December. [DOC2008/256815]
From [Aug] 2008 the Post-Graduate Foundation in Veterinary Science changed its name to Centre for Veterinary Education (CVE). The Centre was governed by a Management Committee and an Advisory Council. The Postgraduate Committee in Veterinary Science is last listed in the 2007 Calendar and is no longer listed in any University publications from 2008 onward.
