At its meeting on 14 July 1980, the College Council decided to join the proposed Sydney College of Advanced Education. The Board of Studies was appointed by the Academic Board to oversee the academic programme of the College during the interim period. At its meeting on 2 July 1980, the Academic Board stipulated the membership of the Board and its purpose, i.e., to oversee academic progress within the College. At its first meeting on 17 July 1980, the Board of Studies enunciated its role as the articulation of the policies of the Academic Board and the Departments. It elaborated on that role at its meeting on 22 July and stated that its purpose was to deal with policy matters and to provide advice to the College Council. It was charged with overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the College but each Department was autonomous and responsible for its independent area.
