The Board of Studies is first mentioned in the By-Laws in the 1913 Calendar, [Chap XVIB. 4] The By-law was approved by the Governor in Council on 21 January 1913; it pertained to the function of the Department of Economics and Commerce in granting the degree of Bachelor of Economics. The Board of Studies of the Department had responsibility in regard to the nature of the subject and the tutorial or other supplementary instruction provided. Apart from a slight change to the name, in 1918 Chap XVIX.1 of the By-Laws now constituted the Board of Studies in Economics and Commerce as follows:1. There shall be a Board of Studies in Economics and Commerce which shall consist of the Professor of Economics and the Lecturers in the subjects primarily prescribed for degrees in Economics. Its Chairman shall be the Professor of Economics, but in his absence the members then present shall elect a chairman from amongst themselves.2. Subject to such resolutions as may be passed by the Senate, the Professor of Economics shall exercise general direction and superintendence over the teaching of subjects primarily prescribed for the degree in Economics and Commerce. The Board of Studies was responsible to the Faculty of Arts. With the establishment of the Faculty of Economics in 1920 and the introduction of new By-Laws, the Board of Studies in Economics and Commerce cased to exist.
