Camilla Wedgwood was granted a fellowship through the Australian National Research Council (ANRC) to carry out fieldwork on Manum Island, New Guinea from December 1932 to February 1934, and Narau, January to May 1935. The photographs were originally within the photographs of Professor of Anthropology, AP Elkin's papers, who was chairman of the Anthropology section of the ANRC and approved Wedgwood's research application to Manum and Narau. Wedgwood would have handed over the negatives to Elkin as they belonged to the ANRC as they funded the research, as per section xiiii of the ANRC's Conditions Governing Grants and Fellowships for Anthropological Research.

The photographs have been removed from Elkin's papers to better reflect their provenance.

There is a catalogue of the photographs taken by Wedgwood while on Manum within the papers of the Australian National Research Council (ANRC) (Series 761, (old ref P130/40/84) which has been used to describe the images. There are negatives missing which Wedgwood mentions in the catalogue either due to under/over exposure or damp, but it is unclear why some negatives are missing.

Wedgwood's correspondence with the ANRC includes letters detailing her trips to Manum and Narau.

The National Library of Australia has photograph albums of Wedgwood's time on Manum Island and Nauru (accessed 05/02/2026). These albums could be the prints of these negatives.

The Historic Photograph Collection at the Chau Chak Wing Museum has glass lantern slides of some of the images which may have been used for teaching in the Department of Anthropology.
