Contact Information Centre

The Union Contact Information and Referral Service entered its eighth year of operation in 1989. The University funded 20 per cent of the costs and the Union 80 per cent. Contact as it was called answered enquiries from staff and students regarding such matters as financial assistance, accommodation and legal referrals.

In 1989 it was coordinated by one full-time social work graduate and an administrator, also a graduate of the university, and staffed by 90 volunteer undergraduates from faculties including Arts, Science, Lasw, Social Work, and Medicine. The volunteers undertook an 8-week training program prior to their work.

Contact also ran a radio program on Radio 2RSR FM broadcasted every Sunday at 8pm to inform students and others of events that took place on and off campus. Announcers and panel operators were also trained volunteers. 

Contact also coordinated a School Tutoring Program set up in 1984 by two final year social work students to redress the imbalance of students attending university, by encouraging greater numbers from inner-city schools.

After the Boston Review in 1992 the University established a Student Centre which consolidated many of the tasks the former Student Centre and Contact did.
