Founded in 1874 it was reestablished on a wider basis by Senate in 1911.
The original society had for its main object the intellectual culture of its members, but also began the tradition of a more comprehensive union, which should become the centre of university common life. By 1925 the Union was a fully appointed Club on the University grounds and was open to all University men; the promotion of intellectual culture continued and was represented by regular weekly meetings for debate, a tradition which went back to 1874. Membership was open to university men, life membership to graduates and members of Convocation only.
