Architectural Plans of University Buildings [Buildings and Grounds] (Series 618)
This series consists of architectural plans of University buildings, including the Main Buildings, Great Hall, Anderson Stuart, Holme Building, Badham, John Woolley, Physics, Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Macleay Museum, Madsen, MacLaurin Hall, McMaster Laboratories Baxter's Lodge, the Institute and St Paul's College. There are also plans of University Chambers in Elizabeth Street, the former Bonds Building in Mallett Street and Fisher Library. As well as floor plans and sections there are elevation and perspective drawings, many of which are coloured. While many of the drawings are from the Government Architect's Office (George McRae, Walter Liberty Vernon and others), some are by Professor Leslie Wilkinson as University Architect. The 1850s drawings of the Main Buildings are probably from the office of the Colonial Architect, under Edmund Blacket.
The drawings have been subject to a variety of numbering schemes (by building, using current code, some have item numbers assigned). The most recent is based on University building codes, followed by a running number written in black felt marker in the bottom right corner. The item listing uses some of these item numbers to identify particular plans. Other plans, already held by the Archives, have been placed in folders based upon current building codes. The item description uses the name given to the building on the plan, followed by the current name in brackets, where there has been a change.
In 1993, all the hardcopy building plans in the then Buildings and Grounds office were microfilmed under the supervision of an architect employed for the project who also numbered the plans. The aperture card copies were retained by Buildings and Grounds and the master negatives were stored by the Archives with the other microfilm master negatives at GRR (Kingswood). Subsequently electronic scans were made from the microfilm and were retained by Campus Infrastructure Services (CIS). The digital copies were also retained by the Archives in the corporate recordkeeping system (ACCESSION-2476), where they are divided up by building for ease of retrieval. Pre-WWII hardcopy plans and some others of particular significance were retained in the Archives and the remainder destroyed. Each master roll of film has a listing of what plans were copied, some marked with a cross were not found at the time and so were not filmed. Below is a listing of the film numbers and the plans on each roll.
