Public Examinations Results Register, Civil Service [Registrar] (Series 80)

From 1871 to 1875, all candidates for admission to the Public Service of NSW were required to pass Section 1 of the Junior Public Examination. From 1873, candidates appear to have been designated as 'Civil Service' although the separate examination did not commence until 1875. The examination was held on the first Monday in April, July and November, and in country districts on the second Monday in October. All genders were eligible to sit the exams. The volumes in this series include the candidates' full names, place of education, results in each subject, and fees paid. The University ceased to hold these examinations in 1896, having been informed by the Public Service Board that it would no longer be required.

The arrangement is numerical within each examination centre. Item 1: names and notes in shorthand; Item 2: information is in the last quarter of the volume with names and number; Item 3: number, surname, first name, place of education or teachers name, shorthand notes in regards to English, dictation, history, geography, arithmetic and remarks.
