William Mathew O'Neil, professor of psychology, was a psychologist and academic at the University. O'Neil was offered the McCaughey Chair of Psychology in 1945, taking over from his teacher H Tasman Lovell, and becoming the second professor of psychology at the University, which then had the only Chair of Psychology in Australia. Following two terms as Chairman of the Professorial Board, first from 1955 to 1959 and again from 1961 to 1965, O’Neil took on the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 1965.
