Photographs [Gordon Bradley Lowe] (Series 1200)
Gordon Bradley Lowe (M.B., Ch.M. 1915) served in World War I (WWI) as a Major in the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) - 3rd Australian General Hospital (AGH) and 5th Australian Field Ambulance (AFA) in Egypt and France.
The 471 photographs in this series, many taken by Lowe, are predominantly contact sheet prints, prints and postcards, with one glass lantern slide. The majority of the images have annotations on the reverse and are of the 3rd AGH in Lemnos, Greece and Abbassia, Cairo, Egypt, and of the 5th AFA in France. There are images of staff nurses, hospitals, barracks, medics, and wards. While in Egypt, Lowe took many photographs while on leave. There are postcards showing Australian Imperial Force (AIF) men which were given to Lowe, as on Item REF-00003038 he writes, "For my collection at home...". There are four images of Gallipoli but from Lowe's army military record listed in the National Archives of Australia (NAA), he is stationed Lemnos, Egypt at the time, so someone may have given him a copy of those images. There are also additional images which were in an album collected by Lowe. The album was digitised but unfortunately its whereabouts are now unknown. The album contains images of Sydney University Scouts, group shots of 1912 medical students, prosectors, and sporting teams. There are also three portraits of soldiers taken from publications; again, Lowe is likely not the photographer, and he has annotated either the images or the album with dates, names and locations.
The images were put in an artificial series by the donor. A further artificial series has been imposed by the Archivist on examination of the images and the descriptions on the reverse. It is likely that as images are further identified there will be additional arrangement. The images are arranged as follows, as at 21/09/2020:
