School of Physics Arnhem Land Crocodiles Film, Rolls 1A to 1K and 1M to 1V

Professor Harry Messel, Head of School of Physics from 1952 to 1987, was a pioneer in crocodile research. Professor Messel, known as the "champion of crocodiles", is credited with helping save Australia's saltwater crocodiles from the brink of extinction. He spearheaded the set up of tracking systems for crocodiles in northern Australia in the 1970s, most of which are still used today by the Northern Territory's Parks and Wildlife Commission. Professor Messel also worked extensively to implement a national trade ban on crocodiles at a time when the population of saltwater crocodiles was as low as 4000.

This series of film reels capturing a crocodile research and tracking trip in Arnhem Land was created around the time crocodiles were recognised as a protected species (in 1974). Professor Messel eventually became a supporter of the sustainable use of crocodiles.
