Add20th Feb 2024 3:16PMI enjoyed the story about the dance hall at the site of the present Wentworth Building. I remember walking through it to Darlington in the 1960s on the way to Redfern Station. As I recall it had a wooden sprung floor and plywood palm trees for decor. The old school was still operational then. Harold Maze was acquiring properties in the suburb and "encouraging" others to sell by demolishing terrace houses, etc and leaving the rubble on site. The locals hated the University. Fortunately Glebe was spared this devastation.
The old "Science pub" on the corner, the Lalla Rookh was also acquired and demolished for Wentworth. The licence went with the hotel and was not transferred to the Unions. Manning Bar later became the first alcohol outlet on campus. The fence and the horse trough on City Road are still there.
