Heritage Advisory Group
A Cultural Heritage Committee was established as a Committee of Senate in the late 1980s. Vice Chancellor Don McNichol did not reinstate the Cultural Heritage Committee when reviewing the Committees of Senate under his tenure (1990-1996) (Memo to DVC Eltis from Curator of the University Collection, Pamela Bell, 7 February 1997 - file 028/0026/00159.)
The Heritage Management Committee, reporting to the Vice Chancellor, was established in March 1997 to:
-develop appropriate policy for the management of the University heritage;
-review and endorse recommendations on the management of the University's heritage portfolio; and
-advise the University on the positive and pro-active management of heritage issues affecting the University.
The impetus by the Vice Chancellor to establish a Heritage Management Committee in 1997 was the various obligations the University had under various legislation concerning heritage and conservation.
The first meeting of the Committee was held on 7 April 1997. The terms of reference agreed at the meeting were:
-prepare a Heritage and Conservation Management Policy together with an initial five year plan including estimated funding implications;
-act as the group, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor, where significant heritage and conservation issues are referred to for discussion and recommendations on policy and implementation;
-guide the development of the University Heritage and Conservation Register
-oversee the preparation of the heritage guidelines for implementation of Heritage and Conservation policy including application of the Heritage and Conservation Register effectively in heritage asset management
-oversee the prompt integration of the Heritage Plan into relevant University activities. (From file 028/0026/00149)
From Heritage Management Policy 24 September 1999.
The University has established a Heritage Management Committee which is charged with advising the Vice-Chancellor on the management of heritage issues in the University. This includes both its social and legal obligations. The Committee membership is drawn from the University's academic and general staff. It includes members with expertise in museum management, architecture, the built environment, history and archival practice.
Among the Committee's particular responsibilities are:
• the preparation of a Heritage Management Policy and its implementation
• the establishment of a network of working groups which will report to it in relation to particular heritage or conservation issues
• the development of the University's Heritage and Conservation Register, an obligation which the University has under the Act.
The Committee is also responsible for the development and implementation of policies relating, but not restricted to, its museums and collections (including its art collection), memorabilia, building conservation, archives, and disaster preparedness and recovery planning. In the pursuit of these activities, the Committee will draw on the many sources of expertise that are available to it from within the University community and from its alumni, and it will encourage an active exchange of ideas and advice with all staff members and students to achieve a concerted approach to the preservation of heritage.
