The Melanoma Foundation was established to foster prevention, treatment and research into melanoma and related skin conditions. Its work involves public education on the dangers of melanoma, and the preventative measures that can be taken. The foundation also supports the work of the Syndey Melanoma Unit, the world's largest melanoma treatment centre.
The Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Institute (MASCRI) was developed in 1994 as a joint venture of the Melanoma foundation and the dermatology research foundation, both foundations of the University. The overall objective of MASCRI is to reduce the impact on people of melanoma and skin cancer through excellence in research into causes, control and care (The Melanoma Foundation Annual Report 1994).
Inaugural meeting of the Foundation was held 14 November 1984. First meeting of the Council of the Melanoma Foundation was held 27 February 1985.
