On 6 December 2010 Senate had an update on the structural changes to the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Arts. It gave approval in principle for the Faculty of Economics and Business, with the transfer of the Discipline of Economics, the Centre for International Security Studies and the Graduate School of Government from the Faculty to the Faculty of Arts from 1 January 2011. [Senate res 222/10] Reflecting the transfer of these three bodies to the Faculty of Arts the Faculty became the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences with effect from 1 January 2011. The School of Economics is first listed in the 2012 Calendar as one of the schools, departments, centres and programs that the Vice-Chancellor has determined shall be placed under the supervision of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. [2012 Calendar p. 335/336]
In 2020 the school described itself as having been established to serve as the primary institutional vehicle for Economics research and education within the University of Sydney. In the year of its establishment, 2011, it inaugurated an annual public lecture series – the Warren Hogan Memorial Lecture – devoted to the economic analysis of public policy issues. It commemorates Warren Pat Hogan (1929–2009), Professor of Economics in the University of Sydney, 1968–1998.The Memorial Lecture was hosted alternatively by the University of Sydney and UTS.
