University Secretariat
The following was taken from the Secretariat website in 2016 (the website is no longer live).
The University of Sydney Secretariat is located within the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Registrar. Secretariat staff are responsible for providing professional secretariat support for the University's major governance committees which include those of Senate and the Academic Board.
It carried out the following functions in relation to honorary awards of the University:
- arranges the annual call for nominations;
- services Senate's Nominations and Appointments Committee;
- liaises with recipients, the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Deans and the Graduations office to arrange conferring ceremonies arranges for citations to be prepared; and
- maintains information online with respect to:
- the Nominations and Appointments Committee
- honorary awards
- names and ceremonies for this year's recipients
- names and dates of all honorary awards recipients
- citations for honorary awards recipients
- photo gallery
- historical information
It also has responsibility for:
- providing policy advice and coordination;
- undertaking research on policy matters;
- providing assistance to Academic Board working parties and committees which are developing policies;
- developing strategies for, co-ordinating, monitoring and advising the Chair of the Academic Board on implementation of Academic Board policy;
- drafting, developing and reviewing policies;
- updating Policy OnLine with new and amended policies approved by the Academic Board and Senate; and
- updating Statutes, regulations and resolutions in the University Calendar promulgating new and amended Rules.
And, the University Secretariat has the following responsibilities regarding various University publications:
- owns and is responsible for the content of:
- the Handbook for Fellows of Senate
- he Academic Board Handbook
- the Academic Board Pamphlet
- contributes to the University Annual Report
- updates the Statutes, regulations and resolutions in the University Calendar, the Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations.

As of 2021, the University Secretariat manages and services Committees in three streams of governance: Senate and Committees; Academic Board and Committees; and University Executive and Committees.
The University Secretariat is responsible for setting the annual governance calendar; preparing meeting agendas and papers; attending and minuting meetings; and facilitating follow-up actions.
The University Secretariat runs elections for positions on the Senate, Academic Board, and Faculties, and the Secretary to Senate is the University’s Returning Officer.
The Secretariat also undertakes governance projects on an as-needed basis, including providing governance advice to faculties and professional units, policy review, and governance training.
Executive support for the Chancellor and Chair of Academic Board is also managed from the University Secretariat.
