On the 5th August 1857 the Senate proposed the establishment of a committee to deal with issues relating to the Library. The members of this committee were decided in a Senate meeting of 11th February 1858 and they were to be the Provost, Vice-Provost and two other members of the Senate to be elected annually, also the Senior Professors of Classics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Experimental Physics.
The Library Committee met for the first time on the 3rd May 1858 and among their first resolutions were proposals to prepare a library catalogue and to revise a code of rules for admission to the library.
The functions of the Committee were to: (1) Propose regulations to the Senate for the gradual augmentation of the library; (2) Manage the expenditure of funds provided for the purchase of books and periodicals.
On the recommendation of the Library Executive Committee and the Professorial Board, the Library Committee and the Library Executive Committee were abolished by the Senate at the end of 1968. In their place was established a Library Advisory Committee, designed to provide a means for the Librarian to consult regularly a widely representative body of University opinion.
