The Research Institute for Asia and the Pacific (RIAP) was a research and training unit within the International Portfolio of the University of Sydney.
Founded in 1989, RIAP initiated, developed and managed multidisciplinary projects that supported the international development priorities of the University. RIAP also played a role in supporting the foreign policy outreach activities of the Australian government and organisations, and the capacity building needs of countries in the Asia Pacific region.
Drawing upon the expertise and resources of the University, as well as regional institutions and professional consultants, RIAP delivered training, conducted research and provided policy advice in areas such as public sector reform, economic development, financial governance, environmental management, international aid coordination and human resource development.
Clients included foreign governments, domestic and multinational private enterprises, aid agencies such as AusAID, and multilateral trade forums and development bodies such as APEC, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and UN agencies.
Change management started in 2009 and was finalized in 2011. RIAP was financially disestablished as a business unit in 2010 with the creation of two new responsibility centres for each of the two new programs, the International Resource Development Program and the International Leaders Program.
