The Sydney University Science Society was established in 1904. Its objective was to further 'scientific knowledge and inquiry by the reading of papers on subjects of scientific interest, by the encouragement of original research, by exhibits, by lectures, by field excursions, and by visits to the various museums, and to chemical, physical and other laboratories and works'. In scope the Society was to embrace all branches of pure and applied science.
On October 17, 1934, it was proposed to change the name of the Society from Sydney University Science Society to Sydney University Science Association. The 1934 to 1935 Annual Report was published under its new name. The exact date when the name was changed back to Science Society (SciSoc) is not known.
