Advisory Committee on University Life
Senate had referred a communication from the University Sports Union to the Professorial Board for action. To deal with the matter the Professorial Board called a general conference of University Societies (both general and sporting). The conference was held on 8 November 1921, chaired by the Chancellor and attended by all University Societies. It was resolved to form a committee from the Undergraduates' and Sports Associations with a view of obtaining the students' point of view on the lack of university spirit, particularly in regard to university sport. This committee presented a report to the Professorial Board resulting from which a sub-committee consisting of members of the Board and student societies was formed. This subcommittee presented a report to a special meeting of the Professorial Board on 22 December 1921. The Board then presented a report to Senate at its 1922 February meeting.
The Report was based on two considerations: (a) the representatives of the Sports Union declared that the Sports Union was in grave financial difficulty and was unable to provide for the minimum necessary expenditure for the current year. (b) The Committee of the Conference believed that University activities, generally, had not the full measure of graduate or undergraduate or official University support to which they were entitled, and that there was urgent need for the removal of obstacles thereby caused to the development of true University spirit.
Senate considered the report and resolved to give it further consideration at its next meeting while also adopting recommendation 3 in part 1: That the Senate appoint for the year 1922 an 'Advisory Committee on University Life', containing two representatives of the Undergraduates' Association, one of the Women Undergraduates' Association, one of the Evening Students' Association, two of the Sports' Union, two of the Union, one of the Women's Union, and five of the University Teaching and Administrative Staffs, which Committee will elect its own Chairman and Hon. Secretary or Secretaries, and meet regularly at least periodically and not less than once a term, to discuss matters referred to it by any University body, or undertaken, upon its own initiative, and to advise the Senate on its conclusions.
In 1923 the Chair of the Committee was ER Holme; Deputy Chair: JI Hunter; Hon. Secretary: IG Mackay.
This Accession was listed as a student organisation under S100, and has been transferred to M Series, series 1117. The material seems to have been assembled by the University Library prior to its transfer to the Archives. Records in this accession are dated 1924 and 1928 and consist of letters to the Honorary Secretary and of Rules for the Conduct of Business of the Advisory Committee, no date.
