Preceding agency Department of Modern Literature est. 1887, called School of Modern Literature by 1899.On 3 November 1919 the Senate adopted a report of the committee it appointed to consider the Professorial Board's recommendations on the academic structure of the University. This included the creation of six new faculties. New By-Laws and Regulations were adopted. The restructure of the academic structure also brought structural changes within individual faculties. New regulations covering the disciplines were published in the 1922 Calendar. The School of Modern Literature had become the School of English Language and Literature, other schools in the Faculty of Arts were: School of Classical Philology and Ancient History, School of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, School of Logic, Mental, Moral and Political Philosophy, School of French and German, School of History. The Department of English, part of the School of Letters, Art & Media (SLAM), was reviewed in 2010. The review had recommended revision and reduction of courses, restructuring of the major and revisions to Honours. As part of the review of SLAM in 2014 it was recommended that the Department of English, SLAM's largest Department, work together with the School and Faculty to establish its new Masters of English Studies, building on departmental research strengths while cementing historic connections with English school teachers. English needed to take redevelopment to the next stage, joining its continuing internal focus with a necessary external focus in re-envisaging the Department and Literary Studies, restating for contemporary circumstances the value of Literature and the Literary within both the University and the broader community including research partners and national literary institutions. In 2020 the Department of English offered undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a wide range of genres, authors and historical periods in English literature and language, as well as Irish, American and Australian literatures, literary theory, film studies and creative writing.
