On 7 August 1962, Senate resolved to establish a University Press, to appoint a provisional board of five, and to issue University publications, including the Calendar and Faculty handbooks, under the imprint Sydney University Press (SUP). It was stressed that SUP would not be a publisher, bookseller, or printer. The first provisional Board consisted of the Vice-Chancellor (Sir Stephen Roberts), Professor S.J. Butlin, Dr. F. Lions, Professor W.L. Morison and Professor G.P.Shipp. The first meeting of the Provisional board was held on 8 October 1962.
Senate adopted the necessary By-Law relating to the Constitution of the Press on 5 November 1962, and also resolved to add Professor Sir Edward Ford and Mr B.E. Mansfield to the Board. On 3 December 1962, senate resolved to devote 44,000 pounds from the Eleanor Sophia Wood Bequest to the press for establishment costs.
The Board dropped the Provisional in its title on 13 November 1965, and became simply the Sydney University Press Board. On 1 April 1988 SUP entered a joint publishing agreement with Oxford University Press Australia with works to be published under a joint imprint, and the SUP ceased trading on 29 April 1988.
