Academic Board [Sydney College of the Arts (SCA)]

The Academic Board was the principle advisory body on academic development within the College to SCA Council, Feb 1977 - Jan 1988, and to the New South Wales Institute of the Arts (NSWIA) Board of Governors, Jan 1988 - Dec 1989. Upon joining NSWIA, all throughout 1988, the Academic Board was called 'Interim Academic Board', being called 'Academic Board' again from the first meeting held in 1989.The Planning Committee of the College decided at its meeting on 9 February 1977 that an Academic Board should be formed in accordance with the provisions of the draft By-Laws to assist the College with the transition to corporate status. The By-Law relating to the Board read Division 2, 6. "There shall be a committee of the Council to be called the Academic Board which will be the principal advisory board on academic matters and shall exercise and perform such other powers, authorities, duties and functions as may be determined by the Council from time to time." The first meeting of the Academic Board was held on 25 February 1977 with the Principal John Baily in the Chair.The Academic Board maintained standards regarding academic supervision, procedures and approval of which course proposals would go to Council / the Board of Governors. It was to plan, develop, co-ordinate and oversee the academic program of the College, including the determination of general policies, procedures and regulations concerning student admission, assessment, progression and exclusion, course structures and subject content; the conditions of the conferral of awards; the academic calendar.Upon amalgamation with the University of Sydney in January 1990 the function of the SCA Academic Board were taken over by the SCA College Board.
