Council [Sydney College of Advanced Education (SCAE)]
Sydney CAE was established under the NSW Colleges of Advanced Education Act, 1975 on 24 July 1981. The Act permitted the appointment of a First Council to oversee and guide the development of the new College for a period of one year. It had seventeen members, with the capacity to receive up to eight others. The Principals of the amalgamating institutions and the Chairmen of their respective governing bodies formed the core of the group. The Second Council was appointed in August 1982 for a four year term, and seven of the original council were among the Ministerial appointees. The third, and final Council was appointed in 1986.The role of the Council was to consider and approve the future directions and educational emphasis of the College; to consider and approve the educational profile of the College consistent with the goals of the Council and taking into account social and government initiatives, developments and needs; to authorise policies for the College in areas where the Act and By-Law prescribe and/or to delegate such responsibilities to committees or servants of the College; to authorise the allocation of physical and financial resources of the College and to monitor their effective and efficient use; to monitor the quality of educational programs offered by the College, the educational standards achieved by students and their ability to meet the expectations of the professional and general communities; to encourage recruitment of servants of the highest quality and to establish mechanisms that promote the continued professional development of staff; to consider and approve governance policies, procedures and structures that will ensure that the College and its components gain a reputation for excellence with higher education and to consider and approve of a corporate plan that takes account of the goals of the College and the contribution to be made to the general and professional communities.
