In June 1983 the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Ward, informed Senate of his intention of appointing a committee to compile a publishable statement of University policy and procedures on equal employment opportunity.
The committees statement proposed that E.E.O be the policy of the University, that the University have as an objective the elimination of all forms of discrimination and harassment. In addition the Committee recognised the importance of child care facilities as a part of the E.E.O policy of the University. The appointment of an E.E.O Officer and the creation of an E.E.O Committee to supervise the Universitys progress to the objective of equal employment opportunity, develop and extend the plans the University already has for achieving that goal and to monitor attendant practices. Senate approved the statement of publication at its meeting on 5 December 1983.
The Committees minutes commence on 7 August 1984, which was presumably its first meeting. At this meeting the Committee decided to meet normally every second month, but could meet in the interim if the need arose. The Committee continued to meet and to report annually to Senate until 11 May 1990 when Senate resolved that the Committee would report to Senate upon its deliberations after each regular meeting of the Committee. Following this decision the Committee ceased to keep minutes of its meetings, its deliberations being recorded in its reports to Senate.
