At a special meeting of the Professorial Board, 25 August 1960, the Committee on the establishment of new chairs, proposed that a new Chair in Genetics be deferred and referred the question of the place of study of Genetics in the University back to the Professorial Board. A motion was put forward and carried that the matter be referred to a Committee. (Senate established a Chair in Genetics at its meeting 6 November 1961 (for occupancy from July 1962).)
The Committee appointed by the Professorial Board to consider the place of the study of Genetics in the University had its first meeting on 5 August 1960. The Committee recommended that "the study of genetics in the University should be greatly strengthened...provision of a separate Department of Genetics be not advocated at the present time...he development of the study of genetics be kept constantly under review by this committee and to give effect to this that it should meet at least annually, prior to the meeting of the Vice_Chancellor's Advisory Establishment Committee and in sufficient time to make a recommendation if necessary to that committee..." The Professorial Board adopted the report from the Committee at its meeting 17 October 1960.
