JJW Power, a former medical graduate of the university, had left a legacy of about 2 million dollars to the university when he died in 1943. The bequest passed to the university after his wife's death in 1961. Power's will stated that the gift was for the foundation of a Faculty of Fine Arts.
In 1967 the Vice Chancellor said that there was a need for a standing Executive Committee to be appointed by the Senate to exercise a general supervisory function over operations conducted under the Power Bequest.
