Postgraduate Civil and Mining Engineering Foundation (1982 to 1996)TypeCentre/FoundationDateOct 1968 to 10/02/2017Abolitionby the Vice Chancellor 10/02/2017Description
The Post Graduate Civil Engineering Foundation was established in October 1968. In 1981 the name was changed to Post Graduate Civil & Mining Engineering Foundation, as the departments of Mining and Civil engineering were amalgamated in late 1981 early 1982. (Australia's First: a History of the University of Sydney Vol 2 p290)
The Foundation changed its name in 1996. The Annual Report for 1995 is still in the name of the Postgraduate Civil and Mining Engineering Foundation while the one for 1997 is for the name of Civil Engineering Foundation.
The primary objective of the Foundation was to assist the Senate of the University of Sydney and the Vice-Chancellor on matters associated with under-graduate and post-graduate education and research in the field of civil engineering. The management of the Foundation was vested in the Foundation Council. The Council comprised industry members who, dependent on their level of support of the Foundation, could be Governors or Members and ex-officio members from the University. The Council operated through an Executive Committee comprising of the Foundation President, Deputy President, Foundation Director, Deputy Director and the Foundation Officer. Each member of Council was appointed annually.
The Council of the Civil Engineering Foundation resolved to terminate the Foundation as it was determined that the members of the Council could be more effective in their support as an industry advisory group for the School of Civil Engineering rather than as a University Foundation. This was approved by the Vice Chancellor 10 February 2017.
