The Laboratory was established within the Department of Physical Chemistry in 1970, apparently on a proposal by Professor AE Alexander, Head of Department. In 1984 the laboratory was incorporated into a new Centre, the NWG Macintosh Centre for Quaternary Dating. The new Centre was established in 1984 funded largely by donations from Mrs A Macintosh, the widow of Professor NWG Macintosh. The Centre had independent funding but was under the control of the Electron Microscope Unit (EMU). In 1986 the EMU reported to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor MG Taylor. Dr M Barbetti, originally appointed as Professional Officer within the Department of Chemistry, was transferred to the Macintosh Centre when the radiocarbon dating laboratory was incorporated into the new Centre.
