Hurlstone Training College was established under the Public Instruction Act 1880, along with Fort Street which from then only took men. Initially the courses for teacher training were six months, however this was extended to twelve months from 1882.
In 1905 the pupil-teacher system of training teachers was abolished and training in teachers colleges established, the first being Sydney Teachers College. Fort Street Training College (for men) and Hurlstone Training College (for women) were abolished.
