The first Lecturer in Surgery was Frederick Milford (1834-1902) appointed in 1883. He resigned in 1889, to be replaced by Alexander MacCormick (1856-1947), and who lectured until 1914. He was suceeded by Francis percival Sandes (1885-1945), who in 1921 became the first Professor of Surgery. His successors were Harold Robert Dew (1891-1962), Professor 1930-1956, and John Loewenthal (1914-1979), Professor 1956-1979.
