In 1853, Anselme Ricard was appointed Lecturer in French and German; in 1854, a Chair of the French and German languages and Literature was established, and the duties of which were entrusted to M. Anselme Ricard, Ph.D (Jena), Br.es Lettres (Paris). In 1884, the Lectureship of Modern Language was divided into one each of French and German, but was reunited again in 1888 when Emil J. Trechman was appointed for 1889. There did not appear to be some formal acknowledgement of a Department of French. In that year the staff was listed as G.G Nicholson (McCaughey Professor), Gladys Marks and Yvonne Despres (Lecturers), and Ian Henning (Acting Lecturer). George Gibb Nicholson was appointed as the first Professor of French in 1921, followed by Ian Allen Ramey Henning in 1946, Leigh Ross Cambers in 1971, and Ivan Peter Barko in 1975.
