The Brain and Mind Research Institute (BMRI) at The University of Sydney was established in 2004 as a centre of research excellence, unique in its collaborative model of clinical, translational and basic science research within five juxtaposed buildings. The only centre of its kind in the world, the Brain & Mind Research Institute brings together patients, support groups and front-line carers, including psychiatrists and neurologists, with a team of scientists and clinicians working in the neurosciences and brain research. The neurologists, psychiatrists and basic neuroscientists are housed together in an environment that promotes synergy of effort and sharing of ideas.
The BMRI is an Institute of The University of Sydney. Its legal status and financial dealings are, therefore, within the corporate entity of the University. The Brain & Mind Research Foundation was established to raise private and government monies for the capital works and research programs of the BMRI. The inaugural chair of the Foundation was Mr David Gonski AO (2004-2005). Mr Ryan Stokes was Chairman in 2005, succeeded by Mr Ken Parker and then Robert Johnston AC in 2006. The Foundation reports its financial activities through The University of Sydney
The BMRI is administered by the Executive Director (Professor Ian Hickie), the Scientific Director (Professor Max Bennett) and one other Director (Professor John Pollard). Affiliations of the researchers, programmes and financial accounts within the Institute include the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Science and Faculty of Science within The University of Sydney. The BMRI has also established long-term partnerships with local and interstate universities, industry bodies and non-government organisations including the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, Mental Health Council of Australia, Inspire Foundation and Lifeblood.
