Board of Postgraduate Studies of the Faculty of Veterinary Science
The Board of Postgraduate Studies of Veterinary Science was established by Faculty Resolution: “pursuant to Section 6 (2) of Chapter VIII of the By-laws, the Faculty appoints a Board of Post-Graduate Studies, the constitution of which will be as set out for the Board of Examiners.” [1974 Calendar]Under By-Law 6 (2) (a) Each Faculty may appoint one or more boards of postgraduate studies which shall be responsible for all matters relating to candidature for postgraduate degrees or diplomas.1 [1 For the membership of the various Boards of Examiners and boards of postgraduate studies see the resolutions of the relevant Faculty.](3) Notwithstanding any reference elsewhere in the By-laws to the powers of a Faculty with regard to candidature for postgraduate degrees or diplomas, a board of postgraduate studies appointed by a Faculty in accordance with subsection (2) of this section shall exercise the powers of the Faculty in this regard.By Resolutions of the Faculty the Board Of Examiners had the following role:Pursuant to section 6 of Chapter VIII of the By-laws the Faculty appoints the following Board of Examiners: (1) The Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Veterinary Science shall be constituted as follows: (a) the Professors, Readers, Associate Professors, Directors, Senior Lecturers and Lecturers being full-time permanent members of the teaching staff in the Departments of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Surgery, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Physiology and Animal Husbandry, (b) the Heads of the Departments of Biochemistry, Histology and Embryology, and Pharmacology together with one full-time permanent member of each of these Departments nominated biennially by the Head of the Department, (c) either the Heads of the Schools of Physics, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences or one full-time permanent member of the academic staff of each of these Schools nominated biennially by the Head of the School, (d) the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, (e) the Superintendents, Senior Clinical Pathologist, Senior Clinical Instructors and Clinical Instructors, being full-time permanent members of the staff at the Veterinary Hospital and Clinic and at the Rural Veterinary Centre, and (f) not more than three persons distinguished in the field of Veterinary Science appointed by the Senate on the nomination of the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science with the approval of the Faculty. (2) A person appointed pursuant to subsection (1) (f) shall be appointed for a period of three years and shall be eligible for reappointment for one further period of three years. In 2008 by Resolutions of Senate: Governance: Faculties, Colleges, College Boards, Boards of Studies, Departments, Schools and Committees, the Postgraduate Committee of Studies had the following role: 5.1 Except as provided in section 5.2[Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy] or where the Senate otherwise determines, each faculty or college board shall appoint from its members a board of postgraduate studies which shall exercise in respect of each candidate for a postgraduate degree or diploma the powers and functions of the faculty or college board and shall exercise such other powers and functions in respect of postgraduate degrees and diplomas as the faculty or college board may determine. With the abolition of the Faculty of Veterinary Science and its subsumption as Sydney School of Veterinary Science within the Faculty of Science on 1 January 2017 the Board of Postgraduate Studies of the Faculty of Veterinary Science ceased to exist As part of the University's strategic planning 2016-2020, Senate had decided at its meeting on 14 December 2015 to reduce the number of faculties from 16 to six, with three additional schools reporting directly to the Provost, to come into effect 1 January 2017.
