Room, Thomas Gerald
Room was born on the 10th November, 1902, attending Alleynes School in London. He then went to Cambridge University to study for the Mathematical Tripos.. In 1925 after winning a Smiths prize, he was appointed Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Liverpool. In 1926 he became Fellow of St Johns College and the following year returned to Cambridge to a Lectureship in Mathematics, a position he held until in returned to Sydney to the be appointed the Sydney Chair of Mathematics in 1935.
He was involved in a wide range of activities both inside and outside the University and took an active interest in school mathematics and in 1968 the Mathematics Association of New South Wales instituted the TG Room medal in his honour, an award presented annually to the top candidate in Mathematics at the Higher School Certificate. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Science, was a Fellow of the Senate and was President of the Australian Mathematical Society and the first editor of its journal. He wrote numerous publications and books and spent much of his retirement doing geometrical research.
He was married in 1937 to Jessica Bannerman and had 3 children. He died at his home in St Ives on the 2nd April, 1986, at the age of 83.
